Former Nigeria Striker Michael Eneramo Dies After Collapsing During Local Friendly Match

26

Former Nigeria international striker Michael Eneramo died on Friday after collapsing during a local friendly match in Ungwan Yelwa, Kaduna. He was 40 years old.

According to multiple reports, Eneramo played the entire first half of the match before collapsing approximately five minutes into the second half. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. Early reports suggest he may have suffered a cardiac arrest.

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed the tragic news on Friday. NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, speaking from Cairo, described the incident as devastating.

“I am short of words at this moment,” Sanusi said. “I can only pray that God will grant him eternal rest and also grant his loved ones and the Nigeria football family the fortitude to bear the loss.”

Born on 26 November 1985 in Kaduna, Eneramo earned 10 caps for the Super Eagles, scoring three goals. He made his Nigeria debut in a goalless friendly against Jamaica in London on 11 February 2009. His first international goal came in his second appearance, a 1-1 draw with the Republic of Ireland in London on 29 May 2009. He also featured in Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over France in Saint Etienne and a 3-0 World Cup qualifying win against Kenya in Abuja.

His most memorable goal for the Super Eagles came on 6 September 2009, when he scored in a 2-2 World Cup qualifying draw against Tunisia in Abuja. The result proved crucial in Nigeria’s eventual qualification for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, though Eneramo was not selected for the final squad.

At club level, Eneramo built a distinguished career across Africa, Europe and the Middle East. He began his professional career at Lobi Stars in Nigeria before moving to Tunisian giants Esperance Sportive de Tunis, where he became a fan favorite. Supporters nicknamed him “Al Dababa,” meaning The Tank, in recognition of his powerful physical presence and clinical finishing. During his prolific spell at Esperance, he scored 51 goals in 86 appearances and helped the club capture multiple trophies.

He later moved to Turkey, where he played for several clubs including Besiktas, Sivasspor, Istanbul Basaksehir, Kardemir Karabukspor and Manisaspor. He also had spells in Algeria with USM Alger, in Saudi Arabia with Al Ettifaq and Al Shabab, and in other clubs across the region. Throughout his journey, he was admired for his strength, work rate and goalscoring ability.

Tributes have poured in from across the football world. The NFF led the mourning, with the Super Eagles official social media handle posting a simple message: “Rest in Peace Michael.” Esperance Sportive de Tunis delivered an emotional farewell, describing Eneramo as “one of its most loyal sons” and “a symbol of strength, determination and resolve.” Besiktas expressed deep sadness, extending condolences to his family and loved ones. Sivasspor praised his professionalism and dedication during his time wearing the club’s red and white jersey. The Confederation of African Football also issued a statement, with CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe conveying heartfelt condolences to the NFF, Eneramo’s family and the people of Nigeria.

Eneramo’s death is the latest in a grim period for Nigerian football. His passing came less than a week after former NFA President Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima died in Kano at age 74. It follows the deaths of former coach Chief Adegboye Onigbinde, who passed away on 9 March at age 88, and midfielder Henry Nwosu, a member of Nigeria’s 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winning squad, who died on 14 March at age 62. Sports journalists Niyi Oyeleke and Tonnex Chukwu also died in late February and early March respectively, while broadcaster Temisan Okomi, Group Head of Sports at Classic FM, passed away on 17 April.

Eneramo is survived by his wife and children. The football community across Nigeria, Tunisia and Turkey continues to mourn a player whose presence and imprint on the game transcended borders and will not be forgotten.
