Ghana to host 2027 U 20 Africa Cup of Nations after 28 year wait

The Confederation of African Football has awarded Ghana the hosting rights for the 2027 Under 20 Africa Cup of Nations, ending a 28 year drought since the country last staged the continental youth tournament.

The Ghana Football Association announced the decision in a social media statement, with GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon Okraku confirming the news. Okraku, who also serves as a CAF Vice President, said the decision reflects CAF’s confidence in Ghana’s ability to deliver a tournament that meets the highest standards of youth football on the continent.

Ghana last hosted the U 20 AFCON in 1999, an edition that remains one of the most celebrated moments in the country’s football history. On that occasion, the Black Satellites lifted the trophy on home soil after edging Nigeria’s Flying Eagles 1 0 in the final. The 2027 edition will carry an added layer of significance as it coincides with Ghana’s 70th independence anniversary celebrations.

The Black Satellites are among Africa’s most decorated sides in the competition, having won the title four times in 1993, 1999, 2009 and 2021. They have also finished runners up twice, further cementing their status as a powerhouse in African youth football. Ghana remains the first and only African nation to win the FIFA U 20 World Cup, a feat the Black Satellites achieved in 2009.

The tournament serves as a key development platform for young players across the continent, with the top four finishers securing qualification for the FIFA U 20 World Cup. Over the years, the competition has produced several football stars who have gone on to achieve success at top clubs and international level, and Ghana’s edition is expected to serve as a springboard for the next generation of African talent.

Ghana’s selection comes as no surprise to observers familiar with the country’s recent hosting record. Ghana staged the senior Africa Cup of Nations in 2008, where Egypt defeated Cameroon to claim the title, and also hosted the 2018 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. More recently, the nation served as the main host of the 13th African Games in 2024, with Accra as the primary host city alongside Kumasi and Cape Coast.

CAF has confirmed it will work closely with the GFA and a soon to be established local organising committee to ensure the successful planning and execution of the tournament. The collaboration is expected to focus on infrastructure readiness, logistics, security and overall fan experience, all aimed at delivering a world class event worthy of Africa’s growing football stature. Renovations across various stadia are anticipated to commence as Ghana prepares to host the major football event.

Specific host cities, venues and official dates are yet to be confirmed by CAF, but preparations are already expected to begin. Beyond the excitement of hosting, the tournament represents a broader endorsement of Ghana’s reputation as one of Africa’s premier football hubs and is expected to boost football development, infrastructure and local economic activity. With the 2027 hosting rights secured, Ghana will target a record extending fifth continental title when the Black Satellites compete on home soil once again.
