Kenya Introduces Digital Nomad Work Permit for Remote Workers

Kenya has introduced a ‘Digital Nomad Work Permit’ to attract remote workers to the East African country.

President William Ruto made the disclosure during the opening of the Magical Kenya Travel Expo on Wednesday, October 2, 2024.

The initiative is set to specifically cater to remote workers, offering them the leverage to make Kenya an operating base while rendering their services to clients globally.

We are ready to welcome global digital professionals to come and live, work, and experience Kenya’s rich culture and stunning landscapes,” President Ruto stated.

In addition, the move is considered Kenya’s plan to boost tourism, employment, and foreign investment in the country. In turn, it encourages innovation and entrepreneurship.

President Ruto also announced a visa-free policy for visitors from select countries, welcoming tourists and business travellers to explore Kenya’s tourist centres without migration restrictions via visa applications.

According to the Kenyan government, this approach aligns with its broader strategy to welcome visitors globally and promote tourism and cultural exchange.

With this initiative, according to Kenya Research Institute, Kenya, as of 2023, generated tourist “inbound earnings” of 352 billion in Kenyan Shilling, representing a growth of 31.5 per cent in the tourism sector after the 2020 pandemic.

Additionally, the President introduced a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) for transit passengers at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, allowing travellers with layovers to leave the airport and explore Kenya, enhancing their travel experience and encouraging longer stays in the country.
