Guinean Special Services for the Fight Against Drugs and Organised Crime announced the seizure of 456 kilogrammes of marijuana on Wednesday.

The operation took place in the Boussoura district near the Madina market in the commune of Matam. A suspect, identified as Alhassane Bountou Sylla, was apprehended.

Speaking to the press, Colonel Amara Sayon Traoré, Deputy Secretary General of the unit, said the cargo was seized based on information obtained by officials on the ground in the Boussoura 1 district in the Salliya family.

Traoré said the Special Services first mapped out areas prone to illegal activities and identified drug storage and distribution points. This led them to the discovery of the cannabis stash.

He said the operation was part of efforts to dismantle drug distribution networks and prevent these prohibited substances from invading markets or localities where people are not aware of the danger of drugs.

He also spoke on the broader implications of drug trafficking, saying a country without healthy youth is a country that has no future.

I think that this drug affair does not only concern Guinea, it is a scourge against which the whole world is fighting. But in Guinea, I can say that the authorities are determined to fight against all its forms,” Traoré said.

It will be recalled that the West African region has experienced significant drug seizures in recent months. In October, Guinean security services seized 6.7 kilogrammes of cocaine from a Portuguese passenger, Mamadu Baldé, at Ahmed Sékou Touré International Airport in Conakry.

In September, a Malian citizen, Hamza Coulibaly, was arrested at the same airport attempting to board an Air France flight with 5.7 kilograms of cocaine.

This recent drug bust highlight a growing concern that the West African coast is increasingly becoming a source and a central point for drugs heading to other continents.

Early September, a private jet with Mexican registration carrying 2,633 kilogrammes of cocaine was seized by Guinea-Bissau’s Judicial Police at Osvaldo Vieira International Airport.

Speaking to the press, Traoré called on administrative authorities to support security services in their mission to protect citizens and their properties.
