Malian Customs seized 65 bricks of marijuana, totalling 45.3 kilograms, hidden in two suitcases in a vehicle on the outskirts of the capital, according to the General Directorate of Customs.

The drugs were intercepted on Saturday, November 30, 2024, when a trafficker attempted to evade customs officers using an old motorcycle.

The suspect was arrested and handed over to authorities for legal action.

This is not the first time Mali has had such a seizure. In September, Customs authorities seized 148 bricks of marijuana transported on two motorcycles in Diboli, a town near the border with Senegal. A few weeks before this, the authorities, during a patrol, also seized nearly 78 briquettes of cannabis from Bamako and destined for Senegal.

Still, in September, security agents at Modibo Keita International Airport seized over 2,418 kilograms of cocaine destined for Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

Most recently, Customs officials in Ségou, central Mali, seized over 55 tons of spoiled meat, including goat, beef, liver, fish, and cheese, in an anti-trafficking operation.

Officials have seized more than a ton of explosives concealed in a passenger bus from Ghana. The explosives, totalling 5,000 pieces and weighing more than a ton, were discovered during a search of the overloaded bus, which had travelled into Bamako, the Malian capital.

In late November, they intercepted €1,270,000 concealed in two packages at Modibo Keïta International Airport in Bamako.

The seizures highlight the vigilance of Malian Customs following recent security concerns. They are part of efforts to curb illegal imports and trafficking and to ensure the general safety, including the health of its citizens.
