Not less than a dozen persons were killed in Nigeria on Thursday as police responded with gunfire to the #EndBadGovernance protests against hunger and corruption.

In Kano, witnesses reported 3 deaths in the northern commercial centre due to police action. However, police told People’s Gazette that the violence was caused by disruptive elements who looted stores and attacked other protesters.

Daily Trust further reported that in Suleja, Niger State, 6 protesters were killed with many wounded, when security forces, feeling overwhelmed by the crowd, opened fire to disperse them. The protesters had blocked part of the Abuja-Kaduna highway.

In Maiduguri, Borno State, residents reported 2 fatalities during the protests; likewise, in Kaduna, where two protesters were reportedly killed by security operatives, including one in front of the Kaduna’s Government House.

Despite the intensity of the nationwide protests, the presidency has yet to make a statement addressing the ongoing demonstrations.
