As Strike Lurks, Ogun State University Students Urge FG To 'Urgently' Dialogue With ASUU

The Ogun State Chapter of the National Association of University Students (NAUS) has called on the Federal Government to urgently convene a stakeholders’ meeting to address the impending industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

This was disclosed on Tuesday in a letter signed by the state chairman of NAUS, Emmanuel Akinjetan, who, on behalf of students, said they could not afford another disaster of having the gates of their universities shut, impacting their academic pursuit and their lives generally.

According to Akinjetan, the student expressed deep concern over the potential disruption the impending strike would have on the academic calendar and what it would mean for the student’s future if the government failed to dialogue with ASUU.

“As a matter of national urgency, the federal government should dialogue with the lecturers and resolve all the contentious issues,” he stated.

“As another ASUU strike looms, we beg the Federal Government to prioritise dialogue and compromise to prevent another crisis in the nation’s education sector,” he added.

Akinjetan further called on the state Governor, Dapo Abiodun, to increase aid for higher institutions in the state while also commending him for previous support in education.

“We believe that by working together, the government, ASUU, and all stakeholders can find a mutually beneficial solution to avert a strike and ensure the continued progress of our education system,” Akinjetan said.

The student group’s call for dialogue between government and ASSU came after the planned meeting on Monday with the federal government, ASUU and the Minister of Education was postponed.
