Aircraft Crash Landing at Imo Airport Leaves Four Hospitalised

306

An aircraft operated by a domestic aviation company crash-landed at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, leaving four occupants hospitalised and triggering an official investigation by aviation authorities.

The incident involved a Cessna 172 light aircraft that was en route from Kaduna to Port Harcourt when the crew reported technical difficulties mid-flight. Following the emergency report, the pilot diverted to Owerri as a precautionary measure.

Witnesses and airport officials said the aircraft encountered problems during landing, veering off balance and somersaulting near the runway. Emergency response teams were immediately deployed, and all four occupants were rescued alive and transported to medical facilities for treatment.

While no fatalities were recorded, authorities confirmed that some of the victims sustained serious injuries and remain under observation. Airport operations were briefly monitored, but flights continued without significant disruption.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has launched a formal inquiry into the incident. Investigators have secured the aircraft and begun collecting flight data, crew reports and maintenance records to determine the cause of the emergency.

Aviation experts note that light aircraft incidents, while less common than commercial jet accidents, often point to mechanical faults, weather conditions or human factors. The bureau says it will publish preliminary findings once initial assessments are completed.

The crash has renewed public attention to aviation safety oversight, particularly regarding smaller aircraft operating long domestic routes. Authorities insist that safety standards remain in force and that the outcome of the investigation will guide any corrective measures.
