Abia Introduces Free Mass Transit and Electric Buses for the Festive Season

Abia State has announced the introduction of free urban mass transit for residents as part of its Christmas and New Year interventions, marking a major step in the state’s push to modernise public transportation and reduce the daily cost of movement for citizens.

The initiative, approved by Governor Alex Otti, will see government-owned buses deployed across major urban routes in Umuahia, Aba, and surrounding areas throughout the festive period. Officials say the programme is designed to ease congestion, support low-income earners and provide safer alternatives during one of the busiest travel seasons of the year.

Beyond the temporary fare relief, the policy signals the beginning of a broader transformation of Abia’s transport system. The state confirmed the arrival of its first batch of electric buses, positioning Abia as one of the earliest subnational governments in Nigeria to adopt electric mass transit on a public scale.

The initial fleet consists of 20 forty-seater electric buses with long-range battery capacity and overnight charging capability. Government officials say the buses are being tested and branded ahead of full deployment, with an additional batch expected in early 2026. The long-term target is to roll out up to 100 electric buses across the state in phases.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, the electric buses are expected to significantly reduce fuel costs, emissions and maintenance expenses compared to diesel-powered vehicles. The state plans to operate the buses through a public-private partnership arrangement, ensuring professional management while retaining public oversight.

Authorities have also moved to reassure existing transport operators that the programme is not designed to eliminate tricycles or minibuses. Instead, officials say the electric bus service will focus on high-volume corridors, while informal transport will continue to serve feeder routes.

The transport announcement was part of a wider festive season briefing that highlighted ongoing investments in healthcare outreach, digital skills training for youths and infrastructure rehabilitation. Together, the government says these measures reflect its broader agenda of economic relief, sustainability and long-term development.
