Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Launch Regional Criminal Court to Tackle War Crimes and Human Rights Abuses

Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—members of the Confederation of Sahel States (CSS), have officially announced the creation of the Sahel Regional Criminal and Human Rights Court (CPS-DH).

The newly established court, to be headquartered in Bamako, Mali, is tasked with prosecuting the most serious crimes affecting the region, including war crimes, crimes against humanity, acts of terrorism, and serious human rights violations.

The initiative reflects a deepening judicial alliance among the three nations, aimed at addressing impunity and reinforcing the rule of law across their shared territories.

The court is part of a broader strategy to harmonise judicial systems, improve cross-border legal cooperation, and bolster the fight against instability in the Sahel, aligning with other regional institutions and structures.

It will be recalled that the Confederation earlier announced the deployment of a unified military force of 5,000 troops to counter growing terrorist threats in the region. It also created a joint mobile telecommunications operator, a first-of-its-kind initiative in the region.

The telecommunications project, spearheaded by the Confederation of Sahel States (CSS), aims to enhance connectivity, digital independence, and telecommunications infrastructure across the three countries.
