NFF to Announce New Super Falcons Coach on Tuesday as Team Looks to Rebuild After World Cup Miss

The Nigeria Football Federation and the National Sports Commission are set to announce the appointment of a new head coach for the Super Falcons on Tuesday in Abuja, as the 10-time African champions look to move past a disappointing campaign at the 2026 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations, where they were eliminated at the quarter-final stage and failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Following the team’s underwhelming performance, Justin Madugu was relieved of his position as head coach, leaving the federation with the task of finding a suitable replacement ahead of the next major assignment. With the 2028 Olympic Games qualifiers approaching, the NFF is understood to be keen to appoint a new coach early enough to begin preparations and establish a clear technical direction for the team.

A top NSC official told BSN Sports that the announcement is expected to be made in Abuja on Tuesday as part of efforts to commence preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games in earnest. “In order to start the preparation for the 2028 Olympic Games early, the NFF will announce the new Super Falcons coach on Tuesday,” the official said. The official, however, declined to disclose the identity of the incoming coach, urging Nigerians to wait for the formal unveiling. “Tuesday is around the corner. Wait until the coach is unveiled,” the source added.

The appointment comes at a critical time for the Super Falcons, who have been a dominant force in African women’s football but are now facing mounting pressure to return to winning ways. The failure to qualify for the 2027 World Cup was a significant blow to a team that had participated in every edition of the tournament since its inception in 1991. With the 2028 Olympics on the horizon, the new coach will be expected to rebuild the squad and restore the team’s competitive edge on the continental and global stage.
