Russia’s United Nations Ambassador on Monday countered Donald Trump’s repeated claims that he could end the Russian-Ukraine war if re-elected as United States president.

While addressing reporters, the ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, said, “The Ukrainian crisis cannot be solved in one day.”

During the June 27 debate with President Joe Biden, Trump stated, “If we had a real president, a president that knew — that was respected by Putin … he would have never invaded Ukraine.”

Also, in a CNN town hall back in May 2023, Trump said, “They’re dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I’ll have that done — I’ll have that done in 24 hours.” Trump said he would meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and Russian President, Vladimir Putin, to resolve the conflict.

However, Nebenzia asserted that the war could have ended in April 2022 during negotiations in Istanbul. The diplomat blamed Western countries for blocking a peace deal that was “very close” to an agreement and encouraging Ukraine to continue fighting.

He called Zelenskyy’s current peace plan “a joke”.

Nebenzia also mentioned Putin’s offer on June 14 to cease fire and start negotiations if Ukraine withdrew troops from the four regions annexed by Moscow in 2022 and quit plans to join NATO. Zelenskyy rejected this offer, vowing not to surrender more land.

Furthermore, Nebenzia dismissed Zelenskyy’s peace proposal as “a nonstarter,” urging him to be realistic. The ambassador warned that the longer the conflict continues, the harder it will be to achieve a diplomatic solution.
