Mali Signs Two Mining Deals With Russian Firm Zarubezhgeologia

16

Mali has signed two new contracts with the Russian geological company Zarubezhgeologia to map the country’s mineral resources and set up a national geological information system. The agreements are part of efforts by the Malian government to improve its knowledge and management of the country’s mining wealth.

The first contract covers the creation of a detailed geological and mining map at a 1 to 200,000 scale. The map will be developed progressively across the entire country. It is designed to help authorities analyze the potential for mineral resources, identify promising zones, and point out areas for future exploration. The map will also help define priority zones for mining promotion.

The second contract focuses on building a digital geological information system. This system will centralize data on Mali’s underground resources and make it easier to use. It will include a storage system along with tools for viewing and analyzing the data. The goal is to provide government authorities and industry players with a structured database to improve decision-making and guide mining investments.

These agreements are part of broader reforms in Mali’s mining sector, including new mining codes and a push to strengthen state control over natural resources. The partnership with Russia is intended to help Mali better manage geological information, plan more strategic extraction of its minerals, and strengthen national capacity to oversee its mining assets.
