FG Overlooks Corruption and Forgery, Prohibits 'Money Rituals' in Nollywood Movies

The Federal Government, or FG, through the National Film and Videos Censors Board (NFVCB)CEO, Dr Shaibu Husseini, confirmed that it has approved the prohibition of money ritual glamorisation in Nollywood movies in Nigeria.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Husseini disclosed the prohibition at the National Stakeholders Engagement on Smoke-Free Nollywood event held in Enugu on Wednesday.

In attendance at the event organised by the NFVCB and Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) were movie producers, directors, actors, and leaders of diverse guilds and associations in the Nigerian Film Industry.

At the event, Husseini stated that the industry is facing an emergency requiring bold and ambitious actions from all parents, guardians, and stakeholders.

He further narrated how his predecessor met with the former Minister of Information, Lai Muhammed, on the need to enact a law to curtail the display of smoking in Nigerian movies and saw the need to include money rituals.

Today, I am delighted to announce that the Minister of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy, Hannatu  Musawa, under section 65 of the NFVCB Act 2004, has approved the regulation, he said.

Additionally, Husseini confirmed that the minister has approved the 2024 regulation, which extends the prohibition to include the glamorisation of money rituals in movies, videos, and skits, as well as smoking-related content.

He emphasised that while the government is taking steps to address these issues in the film industry, broader societal issues such as corruption and certificate forgery continue to negatively impact the country’s leadership reputation both domestically and internationally.
