Barcelona’s coach Xavi Hernandez has announced that he will leave the club at the end of the season.
This is coming after Barcelona lost 5-3 at home to Villarreal on Saturday January 27, with Villarreal scoring the fourth and fifth goals during injury time. The result seems to be the last straw that broke Xavi’s back.
“We have reached a point of no return,” Xavi declared. “It’s time for change. As a Culé, I think that it’s time to leave.
“I spoke with the board and the club today. I will leave on the 30th of June,” said the club legend.
The former captain of Barcelona said that the club needed a “new dynamic” and that leaving the club was the best decision for the club. Xavi further said the club “will improve with this decision.”
“Everything will be calmer now. We can compete for the Champions League. At at least with this decision you won’t kill me anymore,” he said, referring to the Spanish press.
Despite winning the La Liga title last season amid the club’s economic difficulties, Xavi has been under pressure this season for not performing up to expectations. The manager submitted that being Barca’s coach is “so difficult.”
Barcelona sit third on the La Liga table, 10 points behind Real Madrid who are topping the log, and eight points behind Girona.
Xavi’s announcement comes a day after Jürgen Klopp announced he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season.
