FIFA Sanctions Nigeria and DR Congo Over World Cup Qualifiers

FIFA has imposed sanctions on both Nigeria national football team and DR Congo national football team following incidents linked to their recent World Cup qualification playoff dispute.

The disciplinary decision comes after tensions surrounding the teams’ battle for a place in the qualification pathway for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nigeria had earlier filed a complaint questioning the eligibility of some DR Congo players, arguing that the use of dual nationals may have violated local nationality laws.

While FIFA reviewed the matter, it also found disciplinary breaches during the fixtures. The football body consequently fined the Nigeria Football Federation.
