FIFA Sanctions Nigeria and DR Congo Over World Cup Qualifiers

325

FIFA has imposed sanctions on both Nigeria national football team and DR Congo national football team following incidents linked to their recent World Cup qualification playoff dispute.

The disciplinary decision comes after tensions surrounding the teams’ battle for a place in the qualification pathway for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nigeria had earlier filed a complaint questioning the eligibility of some DR Congo players, arguing that the use of dual nationals may have violated local nationality laws.

While FIFA reviewed the matter, it also found disciplinary breaches during the fixtures. Nigeria was penalised for security and crowd-control issues during the match, particularly incidents involving fans throwing objects onto the field. The football body consequently fined the Nigeria Football Federation.

The ruling effectively closes the chapter on the dispute that followed Nigeria’s elimination from the qualification pathway. The decision means DR Congo’s progress in the competition remains intact while Nigeria faces sanctions tied to fan conduct rather than the eligibility complaint.

The controversy has sparked debate among football supporters in both countries, with some Nigerian fans arguing the dispute deserved deeper investigation. For the Super Eagles, attention now turns to rebuilding ahead of future continental and international competitions.
