Former governor of Anambra State and the Labour Party Presidential candidate Peter Obi, has called for a transparent and inclusive approach to tax reform in Nigeria.

In a post on X, Obi emphasised the need for robust public debate and deliberation on tax-related policies, stressing that such reforms should not be rushed.

Tax reform is a critical issue, and there is nothing wrong with pursuing it. However, such reform must be subject to robust and informed public debate.

Obi highlighted the importance of public hearings, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to contribute their perspectives.

A public hearing on tax reform is essential, allowing Nigerians from all walks of life to engage meaningfully. This is how we build public trust and ensure inclusivity in policymaking.

According to him, inclusive policymaking is essential for building public trust and ensuring that reforms reflect the interests of all citizens.

He cautioned against focusing solely on increasing government revenue without considering the broader implications on the nation’s economy and the sustainability of its regions.

When considering tax reforms and similar issues, it is insufficient to focus solely on the benefits to the government, particularly in terms of increasing revenue collection.

Obi also urged the government to sensitise the populace and secure their buy-in for any proposed changes, stating that trust and legitimacy are critical to the success of reforms.

Transparency, deliberation, and public engagement must be prioritized to build a participatory democracy, Obi concluded.

Yesterday, during a Channels TV town hall meeting on the Tax Reform Bill, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Tax Policy and Fiscal Reforms, Taiwo Oyedele, denied speculations that the federal government intends to outsource tax revenue collection to Alpha-Beta, a company linked to President Bola Tinubu.

The proposed tax reform bill has generated debates recently, with different stakeholders urging transparency and diligence.

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, urged the National Assembly to ensure transparency and fairness in handling the Tax Reform Bills.

He urged lawmakers to prioritise the interests of Nigerians and align the bills with principles of justice and equity.
