The Rivers State Government has shut down two hospitals for employing unqualified staff and operating without proper registration and licencing. Adewon Hospital in Bori, Khana Local Government Area, and St. Thomas Hospital in Eleme, Eleme Local Government Area.
Dr Adaeze Oreh, the State Commissioner for Health, announced at a news briefing in Port Harcourt that Adewon Hospital was unregistered and using unqualified personnel. St. Thomas Hospital was conducting an extensive health outreach without approval and lacked proper licencing.
She said:
“When we set up the anti-quackery committee of the Rivers State Ministry of Health aimed at sanitising our healthcare environment, we hoped that it would have sent a very strong message quickly.
“And those practitioners that have been conducting themselves without the necessary licencing, without the essential qualification backing, the necessary personnel to deliver healthcare services, we hoped that they would find a way to correct whatever establishment they had going on by seeking the advice and guidance of the Rivers State Ministry of Health on how to proceed with their practice and the services they provide in their facility.
“Unfortunately, three facilities have had to be sealed in the last week. ‘The Adewon Hospital located in Bori, Khana Local Government Area. The St Thomas Hospital in Eleme and the Caprika Spa in Port Harcourt.”
Oreh explained that in the case of the two hospitals, while the practitioners were doctors, many lacked the necessary surgical training, leading to unqualified personnel for surgeries, which posed serious risks to patients. As for Caprika Spa, it was run by an engineer with a questionable aesthetic certification, promoting services online that could mislead the public.
Dr Oreh added that further measures are being taken to prosecute those involved to prevent future incidents.
