Police Spokesman Experiences Police Extortion

387

He made this known to the public via his Twitter (X) account, where he expressed his displeasure at the incident.

According to Adejobi, the extortion by police officers is tantamount to the oppression of Nigerians and the Inspector General of Police has directed senior officers to reprimand any police officer caught in such acts, otherwise they would be held responsible.

Adejobi said, “I personally caught some policemen yesterday while driving along Lagos/Ibadan Expressway. The DPO has been asked to bring them to Abuja.”

“Personally I feel sad, I don’t like it because it’s a sort of oppression. The IGP has clarified that supervisory officers would henceforth be held responsible. The IGP has also directed senior officers to rebuke and confront any of our men who misbehave irrespective of his jurisdiction.”

“Every officer has the right and power to punish any erring personnel anywhere in Nigeria. We can not continue to overlook their misdeeds. This is the sacrifice and the bold step we must take.”

Extortion by the Nigerian Police is practically an institutionalized menace that has been the subject of several conversations for a very long time. It, along with Police Brutality, which is a derivative of the extortion problem in a way, was why Nigerians took to the streets in October 2020 in Protest.

The call by the IGP for senior officers to checkmate their subordinates has been consistent over the years. Sadly, it has not solved the problem to date. In fact, these senior officers allegedly commission the junior officers to extort Nigerians, particularly motorists, who have daily targets for the patrol officers and have a percentage cut. Hopefully, the call by the IGP this time will curb the menace.
