Nigeria: Police Stray Bullet Kills Student On Way to Write WAEC Exam in Ibadan

Policeman Stray Bullet Killed Student

A stray bullet fired by a policeman has killed a school student who was reportedly on his way to sit for his West African Examinations Council (WAEC) paper, on Tuesday morning in Ibadan.

The incident occurred along Gbagi Market Road, where eyewitnesses say a team of police officers was in pursuit of a fleeing vehicle. During the chase, one officer allegedly opened fire, and a stray bullet struck the student, who was seated in his father’s car alongside his twin brother.

The victim was immediately rushed to Welfare Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed him dead on arrival (DOA).

According to reports, the young boy and his twin were dressed in their school uniforms and appeared en route to their WAEC examination centre at the time of the incident.

The tragic killing has sparked outrage among residents and students in the area. In response, a crowd of angry protesters carried the deceased’s body to the Oyo State Secretariat, demanding justice and accountability.

They called on Governor Seyi Makinde to personally intervene and ensure that the officers involved face appropriate consequences.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Oyo State Police Command nor the office of the Governor has issued an official statement regarding the incident.

Videos online show the student lying lifeless on a hospital stretcher, with an injury around his waist, which sympathisers claimed was from the gunshot. A hole in the father’s car was also seen in some videos, which a gunshot could have caused. There were also blood stains on the car’s floor.
