Niger Russia Mining Agreement

The Niger Ministry of Mines and Russian company Zarubejguéologuia have signed a memorandum of understanding to enhance collaboration in geological exploration and mining. The agreement, signed in Niamey on February 25, 2025, aims to modernise resource extraction methods and strengthen Niger’s mining sector.

According to RTN TV, the partnership focuses on technology transfer, scientific data exchange, joint exploration programmes, and training for Nigerien geologists by Russian experts. Zarubejguéologuia, which specialises in deposit mapping and evaluation, will contribute its expertise to improve Niger’s mining capacity.

The Nigerien Ministry of Mines said the memorandum intends to promote sustainable cooperation in geological and mining research. The agreement is also part of Niger’s strategy to attract new international partners following its diplomatic realignment in July 2023, when it cut ties with certain Western countries.

In a related development, it will be recalled that Niger recently granted permits for copper and uranium mining in the Agadez region as part of its broader strategy to develop its natural resources.

Niger has long been recognised for its mineral wealth, with nearly 150 identified mineral deposits, including gold, uranium, coal, copper, tin, lithium, vanadium, phosphate, and coltan.

The government has recently implemented reforms to enhance state control over the mining sector. In September 2024, the National Council for the Safeguarding of the Fatherland (CNSP) established two public mining companies: Masumawa National Gold Company for gold extraction and Timorsoa National Uranium Company for uranium operations.

Meanwhile, according to reports, Russia is planning to open a diplomatic mission in Niamey and is considering the establishment of a Niger-Russia friendship park.
