The Nigerien government has extended the drinking water network in Mainé-Soroa, a department of the Diffa Region, adding 3.630 kilometres to the existing infrastructure.

The project, delivered by Nigérienne Des Eaux in just three weeks and funded by the government with support from development partners, cost 32 million CFA francs and will provide clean drinking water to 5,000 households in Mainé-Soroa and nearby villages.

At the handover ceremony on October 30, 2024, Commander Boubacar Hama, Head of Mainé-Soroa, highlighted the project’s positive impact on public health and local development, noting that improved access to drinking water will help reduce waterborne diseases.

This project is a significant step forward for our population who need it so much. Access to drinking water is a fundamental right and essential for our socio-economic development, Hama said.

He further stated that the completion of this project demonstrates the commitment of the Head of State, General Abdourahamane Tiani and the government, as well as technical partners, to promote sustainable solutions for water infrastructure challenges.

Residents have welcomed the improved access to drinking water, which they say meets a long-standing need and promises to improve overall living conditions.

This development exemplifies the government’s commitment to enhancing public health. The announcement also comes shortly after the government signed a memorandum of understanding with the Canadian company Zimar to build a new oil refinery and petrochemical complex in the Dosso region, further reflecting its general commitment to enhancing the quality of life for its citizens.
