Laguda To Replace Gbajabiamila, after winning Surulere Bye-Election

684

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Fuad Laguda, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the Surulere Federal Constituency 1 bye-election.

The announcement was made by the Returning Officer for the bye-election, Prof Simeon Adebayo, who disclosed that Laguda secured a total of 11,203 votes.

Laguda steps into the role formerly held by Femi Gbajabiamila, who served as the Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2019 and 2023.

Gbajabiamila’s departure from the seat came following his appointment as Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu in mid-2023. Gbajabiamila, a staunch ally of Tinubu, had represented Surulere 1 Federal Constituency for six consecutive terms. His tenure as Speaker of the House of Representatives was marked by significant legislative achievements and leadership.

Following Gbajabiamila’s appointment as Chief of Staff to President Tinubu, his resignation from the House of Representatives last June prompted the declaration of his seat as vacant by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas. This vacancy necessitated the bye-election in Surulere Constituency 1. Laguda was former APC chairman in the Surulere Local Government.
