An unforgettable night of World Cup football in Philadelphia saw the Ivory Coast snatch a dramatic 1-0 victory over Ecuador, with substitute Amad Diallo scoring a breathtaking 90th minute winner.
In a match that had everything except an early goal, a crowd of 68,274 at Lincoln Financial Field witnessed history. The stadium, temporarily renamed ‘Philadelphia Stadium’ for the tournament, hosted its first ever World Cup game, and the drama did not disappoint.
The first half belonged almost entirely to Ecuador. Playing in front of a sea of yellow jerseys, La Tri looked every bit the dominant force their 19-match unbeaten streak suggested. Veteran striker Enner Valencia nearly opened the scoring, blazing just over the bar after a defensive slip. Minutes later, John Yeboah unleashed a thunderous strike from outside the penalty area that crashed against the crossbar. Not to be outdone, Alan Minda then beat the Ivorian defense with a clever run and saw his own effort rattle the post. For all their control, however, Ecuador could not find the breakthrough.
As the second half wore on, the young Ivorian side grew into the contest. 19-year-old winger Yan Diomande was a constant threat on the right flank, creating five chances and injecting life into Les Éléphants attack. Elye Wahi then hit the crossbar in the 52nd minute, but it seemed the game was destined to become the tournament’s first goalless draw. Then came the moment of magic.
Just as full time approached, defender Wilfried Singo burst down the right flank and delivered a perfect cross. Amad Diallo, who had entered as a substitute only minutes earlier, met the ball at the edge of the box and steered a composed left-footed shot past the diving Ecuadorian goalkeeper.

The goal sent the Ivorian bench and their passionate supporters into wild celebrations, securing a historic three points.
The victory is laden with significance for the Ivorians. It marks their first World Cup win since 2014 and, crucially, their first ever victory against a South American opponent at the tournament. Manager Emerse Fae praised his young side’s character, stating the team has genuine ambitions to reach the knockout stage for the first time.
For Ecuador, the loss is a bitter pill to swallow. They become only the fourth team on record to hit the woodwork three times in a World Cup match and still lose, ending their impressive unbeaten streak. Captain Enner Valencia, devastated by the result, urged his team to keep their heads up and fight on.
The result leaves Ivory Coast tied at the top of Group E with Germany, who thrashed Curacao 7-1 earlier in the day. Ivory Coast will face Germany in Toronto on Saturday, while Ecuador will look to recover against Curacao on June 20.
