A senior Sierra Leonean government official has declared that the “whole sane world” holds Peter Obi in high esteem, contrasting the Nigerian opposition leader’s global reputation with what he described as Nigeria’s failure to appreciate honesty in leadership.

The remark was shared on X by user @LM_MessiRebirth, who posted: “The whole sane world idolizes PO, not just Africa. Unfortunately, Nigeria does not appreciate honesty. — Sierra Leone Leader”. The statement appears to reference recent comments made by a Sierra Leonean official, though the exact context and timing of the original remarks remain unclear.

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress for the 2027 election, has cultivated a reputation for fiscal discipline and integrity, earning him a significant following both within Nigeria and across Africa. His global recognition has been noted by observers, with one journalist recently stating that Obi has attained “an exceptional level of global recognition, surpassing all other Nigerian politicians in popularity over the past three years”.

The Sierra Leonean official’s praise echoes similar sentiments expressed in the past by figures from the West African nation. In 2023, the Chairman of Sierra Leone’s Political Parties Regulations Commission, Abdulai Bangura, urged politicians in the country to emulate Obi’s peaceful approach to electoral politics, describing his conduct as “worthy of emulation”. Bangura had noted that he “always referred to Peter Obi when he lost the election” and praised his choice of peaceful resolution of election concerns.
