Gunmen launched an attack on the weekly cattle and main market in Ngalda, the headquarters of Fika Local Government Area in Yobe State, leaving seven traders dead and injuring 11 others. The attack, which occurred around 6 p.m. on Monday, saw the assailants shooting sporadically while looting shops and the cattle market, DailyTrust reported.

Dauda Yakubu Damazai, an aide to the Fika LG Chairman, confirmed to reporters.

“Seven local traders lost their lives and 11 sustained injuries. Those injured were rushed to the General Hospital, Fika, for medical attention”, he said, adding that three of the attackers were killed by a combined effort of security forces and vigilantes.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, revealed that the attack was orchestrated by a group of six armed robbers, led by a suspect identified as Datti Alhaji Dadji from Ngalda town. The robbers stole approximately ₦16.5 million during the raid.

In response to the attack, the residents of Ngalda mobilised and killed three of the robbers, while three others escaped with injuries. The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) led a team to Alhaji Dadji’s house, where a locally made pistol and three cartridges were recovered. Alhaji Dadji has been arrested and is currently in custody for interrogation,” SP Abdulkarim added.

The victims, including the deceased, were evacuated to the General Hospital in Fika for medical treatment and autopsies. Yobe State Commissioner of Police, CP Garba Ahmed, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and urged residents to remain calm.
