Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the current Vice President of Ghana and presidential candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has conceded defeat in the 2024 presidential elections.

In a concession speech delivered on Sunday, Bawumia congratulated his opponent, former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), on his apparent victory.

He acknowledged the preliminary results, which show NDC leading in both the presidential and parliamentary polls, and called for unity among Ghanaians moving forward.

While the Electoral Commission (EC) is yet to release the official results, provisional tallies indicate a strong lead for Mahama.

Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2017, is set to return to the helm of Ghana’s leadership. His victory would mark a significant shift in the nation’s political landscape, ending the NPP’s eight-year rule.

Also, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has secured significant victories in the 9th Parliament of Ghana’s Fourth Republic, flipping several seats historically controlled by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Among the notable losses for the NPP is Kwabena Tahir Hammond, the long-serving MP for Adansi-Asokwa, who was unseated by Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi-Dorani of the NDC.

Similarly, Egyapa Mercer, an influential figure in the Akufo-Addo administration and MP for Sekondi, lost to Blay Nyameke Armah of the NDC. Additionally, Farouk Mahama, representing the Yendi Constituency, also lost his seat to an NDC candidate.
