Gabon Government Dissolves National Team After AFCON Collapse, Aubameyang Dropped

636

Gabon’s government has taken sweeping action against the country’s football establishment following a disastrous outing at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, suspending the national team and ending the international careers of several senior players, including Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

The decision came after Gabon exited the tournament without recording a win, finishing bottom of their group and drawing widespread criticism at home. In a televised address, the government announced the dissolution of the technical crew and a comprehensive review of football administration in the country, citing years of underperformance despite significant investment.

Aubameyang, Gabon’s most recognisable football figure and former African Footballer of the Year, was singled out as part of a generational reset. Officials said the national team had become stagnant and disconnected from domestic football development.

The move has sparked debate within African football circles, with concerns that government intervention could violate international football regulations and expose Gabon to sanctions. Authorities insist the decision is temporary and aimed at rebuilding the sport from the grassroots up, arguing that national pride and accountability outweigh short-term consequences.
