A former Prime Minister of Mali, Moussa Mara, has followed through on his promise to forgo his financial benefits as a former head of government.

In a letter dated August 2, 2024, Mara informed the current Prime Minister, Choguel Kokalla Maïga, of his decision to stop receiving these financial benefits to support the country’s public finances.

Despite the letter, Mara said Tuesday that he received a payment of 700,000 FCFA for August. He donated the amount to the public treasury as promised and wrote another request to the prime minister to halt further payments.

Mara, a chartered accountant, served as Mali’s prime minister from 2014 to 2015 under the presidency of the late Ibrahim Keïta. The 49-year-old is the youngest Malian prime minister ever, at 39.
