FCT Minister, Nyeson Wike

Following news reports that the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike recently allocated thousands of hectares of choice land worth billions of dollars to at least 1 of his children, the Department of Land Administration of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has issued a query to one of its officers, Hassan Shahru Mairiga, a Land Resource Officer I, accusing him of “serious misconduct” for allegedly leaking information.

The query, dated July 4, 2025, with reference number FCT/DLA/189, accused Mairiga of three infractions: unauthorised disclosure of official information, breach of the oath of secrecy, and conduct unbecoming of a public officer.

According to the letter, his action is a “clear violation of Public Service Rules (PSR) 100401 and 100402(i),” a breach of the oath he swore to uphold upon assuming duty, following PSR 100402(i) and undermining the “integrity and confidentiality required of his office” under PSR 100402(aa).

The Department termed his action as “serious misconduct and gross violation of your obligations as a public servant, which is detrimental to the image of the service.”

It will be recalled that a recent report by the Peoples Gazette revealed that the FCT Minister seized at least 1,740 hectares of choice land from its original owners under the pretext of “non-compliance” with FCT land regulations, and then allocated the seized land – which had an estimated worth of at least $2.85 billion – to his son Jordan.

In the meantime, primary schools in the FCT are still closed due to a strike action instituted by teachers over the non-implementation of the new national minimum wage. The situation has persisted despite the federal government’s pronouncements and promises to prioritise education reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The query meanwhile, failed to mention the specific details of the alleged disclosed “official information.”

West Africa Weekly will monitor the developing story and bring you updates as they become available.
