Niger Government Sanctions Mining Firms, Refuses Oil Permit Renewal

The government of Niger has taken firm action against several mining and energy companies, terminating agreements and refusing to renew exploration permits over what officials described as repeated violations of contractual obligations.

The decision was announced after a meeting of the Council of Ministers on Tuesday, where authorities reviewed the activities of several companies operating in the country’s mining and petroleum sectors.

Three companies involved in gold exploitation and refining had their agreements revoked. The affected firms are Compagnie des Mines du Niger, Afrior SA, and Ecomine SA. Government officials said the decision followed a series of breaches that had persisted since 2023.

According to the government, the companies failed to finance local development projects promised under their contracts and did not prioritize employment opportunities for Nigerien citizens. Authorities also cited violations of environmental standards, incomplete payment of taxes and royalties, and the failure to submit mandatory annual technical and financial reports.

In a separate decision, the government also declined to renew the exploration and production authorization of the British energy company Savannah Energy, which operates in the southeastern region of the country.

Officials said the company did not meet the minimum work program requirements outlined in its production sharing contract.

The decisions signal a stronger stance by Niger’s authorities on the management of the country’s natural resources. Government officials said companies operating in the sector must fully respect contractual obligations, environmental standards, and commitments to local communities.

The measures are part of a broader push by Niger’s leadership to reinforce national sovereignty over strategic resources and ensure that mining and petroleum activities deliver tangible benefits for the country’s economy and population.
