The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) releases yet another Tinubu Files, a series of FOIA documents unveiling to the public how a former bagman cum ECOWAS Chairman, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, laundered money in Chicago and has since 1990 been ensnared in numerous corruption scandals, recently being the controversial election that made him President after desecrating the Electoral Act and Constitution of Nigeria through the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Nigerian Judiciary, respectively.

Controversial Election

Speaking of the controversial election, Nigeria and Nigerians in 2023 experienced the most stretched-thin tolerance yet most excruciating suffering and adaptability that any normal – and by normal, I meant mentally stable society– would have contested not only at the ballot but also on the street as a fundamental human right. Nigerians maintained a law and order momentarily affairs with a devil who they know doesn’t play by law and order but is driven by greed. Yet, here we are with a ‘President’ whose vote of confidence couldn’t secure a single Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) since his 220 days in office.

But before the controversial election, West Africa Weekly Editor-in-Chief took to a voluminous investigative report into what would be the beginning of unveiling the depth of mysteries surrounding Bola Ahmed Tinubu. These findings along the way unravel what few knew, and many wouldn’t have known, yet the unravelling faces the challenges that come with protecting the subjects’ right to privacy at the request of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).

Secret, no matter how well kept has a way of telling on itself. It yearns for freedom to be heard or recognized for its existence, even if it means little.

However, the FOIA comes with its exemption. An exemption that gives protection without lifting the burden of proof, even though you know the answer to what you seek. In the case of FBI Files on Tinubu, the documents keep coming in.

FOIA Request

On October 31st, 2023, the FBI granted a partial release of revealing documents about Bola Tinubu during the court proceedings being contested by the Labor Party opposition leader, Peter Obi, and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This document sparks public curiosity into knowing who Bola Ahmed is, to the point that ICIR reports on the US legal website PlainSite’s reaction to the influx of visitors hitting its website due to his money laundering case files.

Subsequently, as promised by the alphabet agency, the FBI released the first 219-page, though partly redacted, file showing the eye-shocking secrecy Bola Ahmed Tinubu fought in US Chicago court not to become public knowledge.

On November 30th, 2023, the investigative agency released the second batch of eye-opening secrecies detailing money laundering involving one now deceased, Akande Gbenga and Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The third release, released on the 31st of December 2023, however, raised the issues surrounding a president with a low vote of confidence yet seeking Foreign Direct Investment. Concern not only to the potential investor(s) but also to the over 200 million Nigerians whose right to elect a President was grossly violated along the divisive means of tribal and religious lines.

  • I am still not satisfied with these partial release. Why not release anything that will make us have sense of his identity. FBI is complicit

  • I want to literally say that the FBI as well as the US is complicit of all these crimes and all these partial release is because an agreement has not been met, the moment he does their bidings, it will all be swept under the carpet. Why not release all the information as we all know they have it all.

  • This is medicine after death. Anyway, with our type of supreme court and inec, the end would have still been the same. I have no hope of anything near proper election in the near future.
