CAF Sanctions Senegal and Morocco After AFCON Final Controversy

165

The Confederation of African Football has imposed a series of disciplinary sanctions on Senegal and Morocco following incidents that marred the Africa Cup of Nations final. The ruling comes after investigations into protests, confrontations and unsporting conduct during and after the match, which was played amid heightened tensions.

CAF confirmed that several players and officials from both teams were found guilty of disciplinary rule violations. Senegal was fined heavily, with sanctions also imposed on team officials for leading protests against match officials. CAF said the conduct undermined the integrity of the competition and set a poor example for fans.

Morocco was also punished, with key players handed suspensions for their actions during the final. The Moroccan Football Federation was fined over the conduct of its officials and matchday personnel, including incidents involving ball boys and sideline interference.

CAF rejected appeals seeking to overturn the match result, stressing that while disciplinary breaches were established, they did not affect the legitimacy of the outcome. The governing body said the sanctions were necessary to deter future misconduct in high-stakes matches.

The ruling has reignited debate around officiating standards, player discipline and crowd control in African football, as CAF continues to push for stricter enforcement of its codes of conduct.
