Burkina Faso's FIFA World Cup qualification

Burkina Faso’s FIFA World Cup qualification hopes received a significant boost on Monday evening as they secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Guinea-Bissau at the Estádio Nacional 24 de Setembro.

Still fresh off a 4-1 thumping over bottom-table Djibouti in Match Day 5, the Stallions confidently entered the game and continued their winning streak to keep the pressure on Group A leaders Egypt, who face Sierra Leone tomorrow.

In-form Shakhtar Donetsk striker Lassina Traoré proved the difference-maker, scoring in both halves to cancel Zidane Banjaqui’s 36th-minute equaliser.

The victory takes the Burkinabé side further clear in second place on 11 points and now just two behind Egypt, who are looking to qualify automatically for the FIFA World Cup as group winners.

In other results from Matchday 6, Namibia and Equatorial Guinea played out an entertaining 1-1 draw in Monday’s opening CAF qualifying match before Burkina Faso and Liberia secured crucial victories against Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé and Príncipe, respectively.

Meanwhile, Mali were left frustrated in a sour, goalless draw with the men from the Central African Republic.
