Super Falcons to Face Cameroon in WAFCON Quarter-Final Clash

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have booked a quarter-final showdown with rivals Cameroon at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after a dramatic conclusion to Group C fixtures. The defending champions secured their place in the knockout stage with a resounding 6-2 victory over Egypt on Wednesday.

The emphatic win featured contributions from six different Nigerian players, with half of the goals coming from the penalty spot. Asisat Oshoala, Christy Ucheibe and Rasheedat Ajibade all converted from twelve yards, while Gift Monday, Uchenna Kanu and Joy Omewa also found the net for the Super Falcons, who led 2-1 at half-time.

Despite finishing with six points from three matches, Nigeria, Zambia and Malawi could not be separated by goal difference. CAF’s regulations required the head-to-head record among the three tied nations to determine final standings. Under that tiebreak, Zambia dropped to third despite winning two games, while Malawi finished top of the group. Tabitha Chawinga’s 72nd-minute goal for Malawi proved decisive in the final table.

The Super Falcons’ second-place finish set up a meeting with Cameroon, who topped Group D after victories over Ghana and Mali. The Indomitable Lionesses have already secured their place in the knockout stage and will face Cape Verde in their final group match. Cameroon arrived at the quarter-finals as Group D leaders, having established themselves as one of the tournament’s strongest sides.

The highly anticipated encounter is scheduled for Sunday, August 9, at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca, with kick-off set for 6 p.m. local time. The match renews one of African women’s football’s fiercest rivalries, with the winner securing an automatic ticket to the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The Super Falcons have beaten Cameroon in their last four meetings, including an Olympic qualifier victory in Yaoundé two years ago.
