NDLEA Intercepts Illicit Drug In Boxing Kits Transit

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have uncovered a consignment of illicit drugs with street name Colos, as concealed in boxing kits on New Year’s Day at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

This interception was made known on Sunday by the Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babalola, via his X’s (formerly Twitter) handle while stating the quantity of the illicit drug (Colos) intercepted to be of a gram seized.

Meanwhile, West Africa Weekly earlier reported on the criminality score at which Nigeria is placed on the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime of 2023 with a 7.28 out of 10 criminality status, with illicit drug trafficking being one of many factors. The report, however, placed Nigeria 1st of 15 West African countries.

Nigeria serves as a significant hub for the cannabis trade,
being a country of origin, departure, and transit for the
drug. The cultivation of cannabis is prevalent in Nigeria,
particularly in the southwest region, with its favorable
weather conditions.

Notably, Nigeria experiences large-scale seizures of cannabis.

This illicit trade is facilitated by
institutional weaknesses, porous borders, and widespread
corruption within the country. The Nigeria–Chad border,
specifically through Maiduguri, is notorious for cannabis
smuggling.  — Excerpts from GIATOC reports, 2023

However, Femi Babalola compared the one gram intercepted to be a little less of what is available on the streets and communities but applauded the operatives’ success as a result of Intel and vigilance of the Federal law enforcement agency.
