Super Eagles Land in Pot A for AFCON 2027 Draw

11

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have been placed in Pot A for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification draw, setting them up as one of the top seeds for Tuesday’s ceremony in Cairo.

The draw will hold at the headquarters of the Egyptian Football Association on Tuesday, with 48 nations set to discover their group stage opponents for the tournament that will be co hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

TOP SEEDING FOR SUPER EAGLES

Nigeria’s placement in Pot A places them alongside the continent’s football heavyweights, including Morocco, Senegal, Algeria, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire and Tunisia among other top ranked nations. The seeding structure guarantees the three time African champions will avoid those elite sides in the group stage of the qualifying campaign.

The 48 participating countries will be divided into 12 groups of four teams each. The first two teams in each group will qualify for the tournament proper, which is scheduled to run from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

William Troost Ekong, who captained Nigeria to a runner up finish at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, has been named as one of the draw assistants by the Confederation of African Football.

SPECIAL FORMAT FOR HOST NATIONS

Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, as co hosts, have already secured automatic places at the finals. Because of this, only one additional nation will qualify from each of the groups containing one of the three host countries. In the remaining nine groups, the top two teams will advance to the finals.

The qualification campaign will be played across three FIFA international windows between September 2026 and March 2027. Matchdays one and two are scheduled for September 21 to October 6, 2026, while the third and fourth rounds of fixtures will take place from November 9 to 17, 2026. The final qualification matches are set for March 22 to 30, 2027.

NIGERIA’S AFCON AMBITIONS

Nigeria, winners of the Africa Cup of Nations in 1980, 1994 and 2013, will be aiming for a fourth continental title after finishing runners up at AFCON 2023 and securing a third place finish at the 2025 edition in Morocco. The Super Eagles are widely expected to navigate the qualifying rounds comfortably, with the draw set to determine the specific path forward.

HISTORIC EAST AFRICAN EDITION

The 2027 tournament marks the first time in AFCON history that three nations will co host the event, with the finals returning to East Africa for the first time since Ethiopia hosted the competition in 1976. Organisers have branded the tournament “PAMOJA”, a Swahili word meaning “together”, reflecting the collaborative spirit of the three host nations.

CAF has described the expanded qualification process as part of its continued effort to build on the commercial and global growth of recent tournaments, with African football’s visibility and competitiveness on the rise. Beyond qualification, the 2027 tournament is expected to drive infrastructure development, tourism growth and regional cooperation across East Africa while showcasing the culture and sporting passion of the host nations.

The Super Eagles’ route to AFCON 2027 will officially begin when the groups are confirmed on Tuesday, with Nigerian fans eagerly awaiting the draw that will determine the team’s qualification opponents.
