The United States government has issued a security alert warning of a possible terrorist threat targeting American facilities and schools in Nigeria.
The warning was released by the United States Embassy in Nigeria, which informed U.S. citizens living in or travelling to the country to increase security precautions due to concerns about potential attacks.
According to the advisory, the potential threat may target American diplomatic locations and institutions connected to the United States. These include the U.S. Embassy Abuja, the U.S. Consulate General Lagos, as well as schools affiliated with the United States across the country.
The embassy urged American citizens to exercise increased vigilance when visiting these locations and to adopt precautionary security measures. These include varying travel routes and times, maintaining awareness of surroundings, and avoiding predictable routines.
The security alert did not provide specific details about the nature of the threat or identify any group responsible. However, officials stressed that the notice was issued as a precaution to help American citizens reduce potential risks.
Authorities also encouraged U.S. nationals in Nigeria to review personal security plans with family members, maintain a low public profile, and ensure communication devices remain accessible in case of emergencies.
Despite the warning, the embassy said consular services at diplomatic missions in Abuja and Lagos remain open while security monitoring continues.
The alert comes amid heightened regional tensions and growing security concerns in parts of West Africa where extremist groups have carried out attacks in recent years.
Officials advised American citizens to continue monitoring official updates from the embassy as authorities assess the situation and provide further guidance if necessary.
