Niger Suspends More Than 320 NGOs in Niamey Over Financial Reporting Violations

807

Authorities in Niger have suspended the activities of more than 320 non-governmental organisations and development associations operating in the capital, Niamey. The decision was issued by the city’s governor, who said the organisations failed to publish their 2024 financial statements in the country’s Official Gazette, a requirement under national law.

The measure aims to improve transparency and ensure that groups working in the humanitarian and development sectors comply with accountability standards. Officials say the suspension will remain in place until each organisation meets its financial reporting obligations.

The move signals a broader effort by the Nigerien authorities to regulate civil society operations more closely, particularly as the capital continues to host a large number of local and international groups involved in aid delivery and community development.
