The Malian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdoulaye Diop, met with João Cravinho, the newly appointed Special Representative of the European Union for the Sahel, during a working visit on Friday. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and addressing key regional and governance challenges.

The discussions were described as strategic and wide-ranging, covering practical modalities of collaboration between Mali and the European Union. The two leaders also analysed the geopolitical and security dynamics of the Sahel region while addressing the evolution of Mali’s governance model.

Much of the dialogue revolved around returning to a stabilised constitutional order in Mali. Both sides highlighted the need for a pragmatic and realistic approach to navigating the Sahel’s complex challenges.

Minister Diop emphasised Mali’s position as “an open, peaceful nation committed to its security and sustainable development.”

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building mutually beneficial partnerships rooted in respect for constitutional principles.

The meeting marks a notable step forward in Mali’s diplomatic relations with the European Union. It also aligns with the broader goals of the Confederation of the Sahel States (CSS), furthering cooperation and stability in the region.

The Confederation of Sahel States (CSS) recently announced the launch of its regional passport, a significant step towards enhancing the free movement of people and goods within its member states. According to a press release issued by the AES presidency, the new AES passports will be circulated on January 29, 2025.
