Zimbabwes President Mnangagwa Rejects Partys Offer to Stay Until 2030

Zimbabwe President Emmerson Mnangagwa rejected an offer by the ruling party to extend his term of office by two years until 2030.

Mnangagwa rejected the offer at the Zanu PF Annual People’s Conference in Bulawayo as the party, in a resolution, urged him to stay in office beyond the two-legal term limit, which expires in 2028.

The party’s resolution aimed to implement Vision 2030, a framework for changing Zimbabwe’s socio-economic environment and enabling the President to finish existing development activities.

The 82-year-old Mnangagwa rejected the offer as he reaffirmed his commitment to the two-term limit set in Zimbabwe’s constitution, as seen in New Zimbabwe.

His Excellency is saying l am a constitutionalist, and l have no intention of serving beyond 2028,” the party’s secretary for legal affairs, Patrick Chinamasa, stated.

This may come as sad news to you, but please don’t stone the message. Where we stand, distinguished guests, of all resolutions, there is one resolution which cannot be implemented without the express consent and agreement of His Excellency, President Cde Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, explained Chinamasa.

Following Mnangagwa’s stance on not extending his term limit past 2028, the Zimbabwe Situation, a daily archive from Zimbabwe covering every essential and relevant media article since March 2000, wrote extensively on the President’s reason.

Many of the ‘whys’ focus on legal challenges, upholding constitutional principles, protecting Mnangagwa’s legacy, and considering international and political costs.
