MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited has officially replaced the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) as the electricity distributor in Enugu State. The handover took place on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, following the transfer of regulatory oversight from the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to the Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) in April.

The handing over marked the end of EEDC’s operations in the state. However, it will continue to distribute electricity in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo states. The EERC, now responsible for regulating the electricity market in Enugu, issued an interim license to MainPower, a subsidiary of EEDC.

At the event, EERC Chairperson Chijioke Okonkwo encouraged MainPower to collaborate with the EERC to ensure reliable and efficient power delivery. Kester Enwereonu, Board Director of MainPower, assured that the company will improve electricity services in Enugu by using advanced technology and data-driven processes. However, this promise comes amid broader challenges facing Nigeria’s power sector, including frequent national grid collapses and aging infrastructure, which often disrupt electricity supply nationwide.
