Kano Dentists To Embark On Indefinite Strike October 1 Over Unmet Demands, Poor Working Conditions

The Kano State chapter of the National Association of Government General and Medical Dental Practitioners has announced plans to embark on an indefinite strike on Tuesday, October 1.

Dr Anas Hassan, the association’s secretary in Kano, disclosed this during a press briefing after their meeting.

According to Hassan, the strike is due to the Kano State government’s failure to meet the association’s demands. He explained that despite reaching an agreement with the government in June, there has been no response.

He said the government has not addressed the issue of post-COVID-19 hazard allowance, which has been paid by the federal government since 2021 but yet to be received by Kano doctors.

He further disclosed that newly employed medical doctors who were hired by the Kano State Government in September 2023 have yet to be paid their salaries.

Hassan also lamented the poor condition of the state’s hospitals and the lack of necessary equipment. He pointed out that the doctor-to-patient ratio in Kano is alarming, with only 600 doctors available to serve nearly 20 million people, resulting in a ratio of one doctor for every 33,000 patients.
