The Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA) has seized a minibus carrying a large quantity of marijuana during a routine search at the Liberia-Sierra Leone border in Bo Waterside, Grand Cape Mount County.

Upon the discovery of the drugs, the driver of the minibus fled and is currently being searched for by Liberian authorities.

The bus, bearing license plate AG 1253, was found with 400 compressed plates of marijuana.

Marijuana is the most commonly used drug in Liberia. There has been concerns over the increasing flow of illegal drugs into Liberia through the Sierra Leone border, a well-known drug trafficking route, according to FrontPageAfrica.

On September 7, a private jet with Mexican registration carrying 2,633 kilogrammes of drugs (cocaine) was seized by Guinea-Bissau’s Judicial Police at Osvaldo Vieira International Airport.

These recent drug interceptions highlight a growing concern that the West African coast is increasingly becoming a source and a midpoint for drugs heading to the European market.
