#EndBadGovernance Protest: US, UK, Canada Issues Security Alerts To Citizens In Nigeria

The United States, United Kingdom, and Canada have issued a security alert warning their citizens in Nigeria of potential violence during the planned #EndBadGovernance nationwide peaceful protests.

In separate travel advisories, the three countries reiterated the potential risks and cautioned their citizens to avoid areas where confrontations between security agencies and protesters might occur.

These security advisories were issued following the planned nationwide protest against hunger and hardship scheduled for August 1, 2024.

In its advisory, the US Mission in Abuja strongly urged its citizens to avoid the rallies, advising them to stay updated via local media as a key way to stay informed and prepared.

Similarly, the UK High Commission warned that protests could occur between July 29 and August 10 in major cities like Abuja and Lagos, as it advised British nationals to avoid crowds.

Political rallies, protests, and violent demonstrations can occur with little notice. Get advice on areas to avoid. Take care if you’re visiting crowded public places or attending events which attract large crowds. If you see a threatening or intimidating situation, do not try to make your way through it. Turn around and move to safety,” the advisory reads.

On the other hand, the Canadian government has also alerted its citizens to steer clear of the planned demonstrations and be vigilant.

Nationwide demonstrations are planned between July 29 to August 5, 2024. They could disrupt traffic and public transportation and turn violent at any time,” the advisory reads.

These advisories indicating the possibility of violent demonstrations have raised security concerns about the planned protests despite being organised and designated to be peaceful.
