Peter Obi Sues Bayo Onanuga N5bn Over False Accusation Of Planned 'Mayhem' In Nigeria

The 2023 Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has filed a lawsuit against Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy to President Bola Tinubu of the ruling All Progressives Party.

The suit, as seen by West Africa Weekly, dated 22nd July, was filed after a lengthy series of accusations laid out by Onanuga, who wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on July 20, 2024, accusing opposition leader, Obi of incubating a crisis in Nigeria.

In the allegation, Onanuga wrote, “REVEALED: Peter Obi’s supporters are the people planning mayhem in Nigeria: Obi should be held responsible for anarchy,” in respect of the nationwide planned peaceful protests on Thursday, August 1st, by Nigerians.

Don’t be fooled: the malcontents planning to stage nationwide protests are supporters of Peter Obi, the failed presidential candidate of the Labour Party. And he should be held responsible for whatever crisis emanates from the action.”

The allegations were viewed over 1.6 million times on X, and received coverage by several legacy (mainstream) media outlets in the country.

In response to the allegations of sponsoring anarchy and “working in connivance with terrorist groups” to usurp the Federal Government after falling short at the 2023 presidential polls, Obi demanded that Onanuga retract the allegations and tender an “unreserved” apology within 72 hours of the receipt of the lawsuit.

Obi demanded the retraction from Onanuga to be posted on his official handle on X, and on “not less than 4 National Dailies”, including Vanguard, This Day, Punch, the Cable and monetary damage of N5 billion “for the embarrassment and defamation” the false publications has caused him and his family.”
