One Killed in Protest Over EFCC, NDLEA Students’ Raid at Kwara State University

In a bid to clamp down on currency-related offences and stabilize the nation's exchange rate, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducted a surprise raid on Bureau De Change (BDC) operators in the Wuse Zone 4 area of Abuja on Monday.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), and Police Force, in a clampdown joint operation, have resulted in the alleged killing of a student of the Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete.

This follows a series of raids on the University students’ apartments over the battle against cybercrime in Nigeria’s educational institutions.

Such raids targeted private hostels, especially the Western and Safari accommodations in the localities of Moro Local Government Area, on alleged cybercrimes among the University’s students.

Residents and students of KWASU environs, in a recent outburst on Friday, reported gunshots and tear gas shots at the student protesters.

The protest set out to confront discrimination and generalisation of crimes among students by the security agencies, including the EFCC, NDLEA, and Police force. Yet, one student was reportedly killed during the outburst.

Meanwhile, the authorities of the University have earlier expressed dismay at the previous outbursts, addressing the approach as brute force yet compromising the safety and rights of its citizens, particularly its students.

This story is still developing.
