The International Court of Justice (ICJ) will on Friday announce its verdict on South Africa’s plea for an interim ruling in its genocide case against Israel.

In a press release on Wednesday by the ICJ, the Court unofficially announced its scheduled hearing at the Hague for Friday, 26th January, over South Africa’s genocidal case against Israel by 1 PM.

The case was held on January 11 and 12, as earlier reported by West Africa Weekly prior to the proceeding. However, the verdict is expected to be live-streamed on the United Nations Web TV, but findings reveal that the UN Web TV had the 2024 Holocaust Remembrance Day scheduled for 1 pm.

South Africa’s officials, who had raised the issue of the Israel-Hamas war before the ICJ and accused Israel of genocide in Gaza, according to Hebrew media, have already reached The Hague, Netherlands, which is the headquarters of the ICJ.

Meanwhile, Co-founder of The Intercept, Jeremy Scahill, responded to the ICJ press release in a quoted post on X. His statement reads:

It is official: There will be a ruling on provisional measures in the Gaza genocide case against Israel on Friday in the Hague.

Israel, during the hearing, had rejected the charge of genocide and, in its defence, stated that the charges are “grossly distorted”.

Israel said that it has the right to defend itself and it is targeting Hamas, which on October 7 had “swarmed into its territory, unleashed brutality beyond comprehension and slaughtered 1200 people”.

In the meantime, the scheduled Friday hearing will only decide on the credibility of the accusation and provisional measures.

Essentially, the crucial question that will be answered is whether the Justice Court wants to maintain its credibility of 75 years in the ‘Service of Peace and Justice’ OR ascertain if there is an International law or not.
