Nigerian Army Arrest Soldier for Killing Driver in Borno

A soldier has been arrested by the Nigerian Army’s 7 Division in Maiduguri, for the suspected murder of a truck driver at a checkpoint on the Maiduguri-Dikwa-Gamboru Road.

Confirming the arrest on Thursday by the 7th Division Public Relations Officer, Lt. Col. A.Y. Jingina, said, “The Army had commenced an investigation after receiving a complaint from the National Union of Road Transport Workers.”

The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday following a misunderstanding between the soldier and the now-deceased truck driver at a checkpoint in Borno.

While the Lieutenant Colonel reassures both the family of the deceased and the NURTW of its commitment to ensuring that justice is served to the family and no stone would be left unturned in this regard, he reiterates the Nigeria Army’s effort to conduct investigations into the alleged and ensure if and when found guilty, such act or it perpetrator would be address within the ambit of the law.

The 7th Division, which is tasked with countering the threat of insurgency, terrorism, and armed banditry prevalent in the North Eastern part of the country has however, reassured the public of its stand against insurgency and remain resolute amidst insecurity while ensuring justice is served to the matter.

Also reacting to the incident, the Borno State Government, through the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, also assures the public of its involvement to monitor the matter to ensure justice is served.

In his statement, he said, “The government is following up on this matter and will take all necessary measures to ensure that the matter is properly investigated and suspects are prosecuted. Anyone who is found guilty will face the full wrath of the law” as he pleaded with the public to maintain peace and decorum while investigation is allowed to take its place according to the law.
