Tinubu Appoints New INEC Commissioners and Board Members, Shifts Focus to 2027 Elections Amid Economic Hardship

President Bola Tinubu has administered the oath of office to newly appointed members of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Code of Conduct Bureau, signalling a focus on the 2027 general elections, amidst the hardships, inflation, rising living costs, and calls for urgent economic relief measures among Nigerians.

At a brief swearing-in ceremony held at the Council Chambers of the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu urged the appointees to uphold the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. He emphasised their critical role in enhancing electoral credibility and promoting accountability in public service.

“I encourage them to uphold the highest standards of integrity in their roles and actively contribute to the advancement of both organisations,” Tinubu said in a post on X following the ceremony.

The newly sworn-in INEC National Commissioners include Abdulrazak Tukur, representing the North West geopolitical zone, and Sunday Aja from Ebonyi State, representing the South East zone. Their appointments, first announced in November 2024, were confirmed by the Senate after a screening process.

The swearing-in took place ahead of the 27th Federal Executive Council meeting.

Many Nigerians have criticised this move as it shifts the current administration’s focus from governance to politics. Nigerians are grappling with insecurity, inflation and high living costs caused by President Tinubu’s subsidy removal in May 2023. However, the government’s attention has moved to the 2027 elections while Nigerians are left to bear the hardship.
